Leverage analyses are calculated based on importance (correlation) vs. performance (percentile ranking). By presenting 1) how the hospital is performing compared to the HealthStream Research Database for each survey item and 2) how important these items are to satisfaction at the hospital, the leverage analysis gives management a powerful tool that will help them in prioritizing organization-wide initiatives and presenting survey results. Here is a previous article that gives a detailed explanation of leverage analyses.
Priority analyses allow us to look at additional factors. For example, in annual patient reports we analyze performance and importance the same way as in the leverage analysis, but we add the additional factor of trending. Leverage analysis and priority analysis results will often be very similar in patient reporting, but the inclusion of trending sometimes can make a big difference between the two. For example, an attribute that has a percentile rank around the 50th percentile and a medium-high correlation could be identified as a high priority, but only if it has had a large negative change in trending. If the same attribute had a large positive change the opposite would happen – it would be identified a low priority rather than a medium.
Given the visual nature of the leverage analysis charts, they are particularly useful for presenting results. However, it should always be noted that leverage analysis charts do not contain trending factors. Together, the leverage analysis and priority analysis provide a complete picture.
