HealthStream Live Webinar: 10 More Things We’ve Learned About HCAHPS

Presented by:
Robin L. Rose
Senior Vice President
HealthStream Research

As of January 2009, results of the HCAHPS inpatient survey are being publicly reported by CMS on behalf of more than 3,700 hospitals. Throughout this year, hospitals have been assessing their own performance on the HCAHPS survey and comparing their results not only to their local competitors but also to state and national benchmarks. During this same time, HealthStream Research has been working closely with its hospital clients to educate clients on the HCAHPS program and work with them to develop action plans for improvement of their survey results. The purpose of this webinar is to share what we are learning about HCAHPS based on our recent consulting experiences. The goal is to help hospital leaders better understand the full ramifications of the HCAHPS program and present ideas that may be helpful to their improvement plans.

In 2008, HealthStream Research presented a national webinar entitled, “10 Things We Have Learned About HCAHPS.” It was widely attended by hospitals throughout the U.S., and the feedback we received indicated the information was very helpful to leaders in getting up to speed with the latest developments in the HCAHPS program. This webinar is an update to that first session, based on our more recent experience with HCAHPS and our interactions with clients.

In this webinar, HealthStream Research will share ten (10) new observations about the HCAHPS program. For example, we will share a case study from one healthcare system that has shown substantial improvement in their HCAHPS scores over the past two years. We will present the approach the system took to achieve this success and the results they have achieved. We will also provide updates on some key HCAHPS program components such as status of the Value Based Purchasing program, guarantee of equivalency in data collection, and new rules regarding other inpatient surveys. Finally, we will share some of the observations of our consulting team such as the reaction many caregivers are having to the HCAHPS program and the need for organizational accountability in sustaining consistently high performance.

Challenges of Excellence

Being in the lead doesn’t always guarantee a win in the race; in healthcare, the race never ends.  While it is essential to celebrate the achievement of success, it is just as important to be mindful of the new challenges that come with simply being at the top.  With so many of HealthStream Research’s clients improving survey after survey and quarter after quarter, it is time to explore the challenges that come with maintaining excellence.
