HealthStream Research Prepares to Launch New, Integrated Website

As HealthStream Research continues the successful integration of The Jackson Organization and Data Management & Research, Inc. (DMR), we are in the final stages of website integration. The Jackson Organization and DMR’s websites will soon be replaced by a single HealthStream Research website, www.healthstreamresearch.com. We’ve been hard at work creating a user-friendly, content-rich website that provides valuable information in support of your research projects. Watch for this new site within the next two weeks.

At this time, please note that this change does not affect sites used for online surveys, data uploads, or online reporting. Until further notice, your survey, upload, and reporting URLs/websites will remain the same.

Discovery: Can You Afford to Settle for "Satisfied Physicians?"

Healthcare leaders know that without a steady, growing stream of referrals and admissions from a cadre of loyal medical staff members, it can be very difficult to grow revenues. HealthStream Research has found that hospitals can advance their culture by developing physicians who are not only loyal admitters but who are also engaged in the improvement of patient care. Unfortunately, our data tells us too many hospitals are settling for physicians who are, on average, only “satisfied.”

Spreading Best Practices: Employee Recognition Plays Part in Retaining Good Employees

Part Two

In a previous Discovery Paper, “What Really Matters to HealthCare Employees?" (May 2007 Random Samples), HealthStream Research looked to our national database to identify factors critical to healthcare employee satisfaction. Ask the Experts

Dr. Randy Carden, Senior Research Consultant

“I have heard of this before but I cannot remember what it means—what is meant by the term standard deviation?”

This is a good question. Many of us learned this in our statistics course in college, but we tend to forget such things if they go unused.

The standard deviation (SD) is a measure of spread in your data. The larger the SD, the more spread there is in your data. Think in terms of dispersion. The larger the SD, the more dispersion there is in your data. The smaller the SD, the less dispersion exists in your data. The standard deviation is a measure of variability around a mean score. In statistical terms, the standard deviation is the square root of a measure called the variance, which is the average of the squares of the deviation scores for the sample for a particular item.
