Overview
The purpose of this Webinar is to educate healthcare executives, physicians and nurses on understanding the behaviors that compound poor communication between physicians and patients and the consequences of those behaviors.  Patients’ feedback on their experience with physician communication is more than a score; it is an opportunity for physicians to re-evaluate the risk associated with poor communication skills and it is an opening for them to consider their ethical obligation to create a therapeutic patient-physician partnership.  The goal of this session is to identify behaviors and actions by physicians, hospital administrators and by nursing staff to eliminate barriers and build strategies to more effective physician-patient communication.  This session includes specific actions by hospital administrators to facilitate that improvement.  Additionally, participants are given examples of nursing decisions and actions that have a powerful impact on enhancing the therapeutic value of physician-patient communication.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the effects of poor physician-patient communication on patient outcomes and satisfaction, malpractice lawsuits and patients’ willingness to recommend hospitals.
  • Explain the HCAHPS development and its probable use in pay for performance.
  • Describe specific nursing driven functions that enhance patients’ ability to communicate effectively with their physicians.
  • Describe responsibilities of administrators and nursing staff to support physicians and their role in facilitating a therapeutic patient-physician relationship.
  • Define specific physician behaviors that build a relationship of trust with patients.

Intended Audience
This continuing medical education activity is for system healthcare executives, hospital CEOs, COOs, CNOs, VPs, Directors, Managers, Physician Executives, physicians and nursing staff who would like more information on HCAHPS and the impact of its scores on their hospitals.
