Linking Generational Differences and Disruptive Behaviors

Presented by:

Director of Member Services
VHA West Coast

To continue our Webinar series supporting the new Joint Commission Leadership Standard (LD.03.01.01) that addresses disruptive and inappropriate behaviors in the healthcare setting, HealthStream Research is offering this continuing medical education activity to help you understand the differences between the generations and how to better communicate with colleagues from other generations.

In today’s health care system, delivery processes involve numerous interfaces and patient handoffs among multiple health care practitioners with varying levels of training.  During the course of a hospital stay, a patient may interact with at least 20 different employees, including physicians, nurses, technicians, and others.  Effective clinical practice involves many instances where critical information must be accurately communicated. When health care professionals are not communicating effectively, patient safety is at risk and medical errors can occur.

Efforts to improve health care safety and quality are often jeopardized by the communication and collaboration barriers that exist between clinical staff.  Although every organization is unique, the barriers to effective communication that organizations face have some common themes.  Some of these barriers include disruptive behavior, culture/ethnic differences, and gender differences.  Another major barrier to effective communication in hospitals is generational differences.

Every generation is different and has unique characteristics that shape them as a cohort.  Each generation has preferences in communication and life styles.  Poor communication can occur when clinicians and hospital staff do not understand these differences.

Overview

The purpose of this Webinar is to educate our clients on the different generations now working in healthcare in terms of defining influences, perceptions and attitudes, social and lifestyle values and behaviors, and how this is reflected in the work environment. The goal of this session is to help leaders identify strategies that they can use to better understand these characteristics and more effectively communicate with a multi-generational team.
